Bio

Your District 7 Representative and Registered Republican Since 1988!

Heather CarterFirst and foremost, I am a mom, wife, and daughter. Family comes first. I was raised with a strong faith and work ethic that has enabled me to do many wonderful things in my life. Most importantly, I have my family’s full support! I am also so blessed to have such a wonderful husband who has been the true soldier of my campaign.  But my support doesn’t end there. I believe I have the most engaged and supportive friends of anyone! Thank you to each one of you for your tireless work!

For those of you I haven’t met, let me take this space to share a little bit about my background and experience.

I am a Republican Educator – an uncommon combination – who understands business and will work relentlessly to position Arizona for the 21st Century. In my professional life, I have a proven track record of solving complex problems with entrepreneurial solutions. I layout a plan and set priorities to get my work done through diligence and hard work. I will not compromise my beliefs and will stand true to my fiscally conservative values.

Currently, I am a Clinical Associate Professor at Arizona State University in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College and have worked at the University for almost 10 years. Over the course of my time at ASU, I helped organize the Office of Innovation and Partnership at the Downtown Campus and worked on initiatives related to educational entrepreneurship and innovation for education reform. I also helped establish the award-winning ASU and Teach For America partnership and worked closely with the Arizona Charter Schools Association. Currently, I teach American Education Systems to our graduate students and Computer Literacy to our undergraduate students. In previous semesters, I have taught Classroom Leadership, Instruction and Management, Content Literacy, Middle School Curriculum, and ASU 101. I am inspired by the students I meet in my classes, and because of them, I have much hope for the future.

Prior to teaching at ASU, I was a 7th grade teacher in the Paradise Valley Unified School District at Greenway Middle School for five years. I was an active teacher-leader. I served on the textbook adoption committee, was the Technology Support Representative for my school, and team captain for my 7th grade team. I also worked on district-wide initiatives including technology innovations and teacher recruitment.

I am a graduate of our Arizona University system, with an undergraduate degree in communications and a Masters in Education Technology from ASU. I finished my Doctorate in Educational Leadership at NAU in 2006.

Prior to working in education, I spent 10 years of my professional life working in sales for exciting companies like KOOL-FM, the Phoenix Suns, Wallace Laboratories and as a real estate agent. I understand corporate America and small businesses and respect and support their contributions to our state.

I believe I hold the most unique balance of education and business experience of any candidate in this race. This is crucial because our work in the State Legislature needs to focus on positioning Arizona for economic recovery over the next 2, 5 and 10 years.

In summary, I hold fiscally conservative values and deeply understand business and the need to support an economic development plan in order to generate revenue in our state. Without this plan in place, we can not provide limited, purposeful government functions like strong public education and public safety systems. I believe we need to set priorities and make difficult decisions, and I am working toward these goals at the Arizona House of Representatives.
